album of the week/ Oasis: Denfinitely maybe

Oasis's 1994 debut album "Definitely maybe " was considered a part of the fast moving new music scene in England known as "Britpop". Britpop was the rock/pop hybrid respond to the American grunge and Alt rock movements being spearheaded by bands like Nirvana and REM. "Definitely maybe" was a breakthrough album, the album was a strong mix of  classic English rock ( The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Animals) and pop bands like the Beatles. The light pop sound mixed with hard rock English swagger was enough to make this debut album radio friendly without " losing its hard rock balls". Here's a run down of the whole album.

1. Rock n roll star: the super fast opening song that introduces you to the band with a speedy hard jolt. 10/10

2. Shakermaker: A bit of a cool down from the crazy opening, but still cool enough to carry you through the rest. 8/10

3. Live forever: An OK song, it did not " live forever" for me. Still good though. 7/10

4. Up in the sky: This song almost sounds like the Beatles you can almost hear Ringo Star trapped somewhere in production...... 9/10

5.Columbia: This song threw me off a bit, but in a good way. "Columbia" is very heavy with an indie rock riff. Good stuff 9/10

6. Supersonic: the highlight of the whole album. the song is slow and heavy at the same time ! a very hard feat in rock music. the lyrics are  super clever, the guitar is super tight and the band is oozing swagger. 10/10

7. Bring it down: Another guitar driven song. has a bit of a pissed off punk feel to it. 9/10

8.Cigarettes and alcohol: A super heavy blues song. you can hear early Rolling Stones in the mix. this is the theme song for nursing a hangover at 3 in the mourning ....... on a school night. 10/10

9. Digsy's dinner: OK i have heard this riff a million times. I guess Oasis started it, so they get the props. This song also begs the question wheres Digsy's dinner ?  9/10

10.Slide away: Just a good rock song ! 9/10

11. Married with children: The end of the album. I guess most of the people playing this record are indeed " married with children" so its a bit of a good bye to the rock star dream....... oh well. 10/10

That sums the whole album up. this record is a very good rock/pop album. When your at the CD store and you see it you better not say " maybe " buy it dammit !
